Garrmalang Festival

May 23, 2019 5:00 pm - May 26, 2019 10:00 pm

Asia and the Pacific | Australia | Darwin | Darwin Entertainment Centre

Cultural events

‘Garrmalang’ is the Indigenous name for Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory in the Top End of Australia.

The Garrmalang Festival is the only Indigenous-specific festival of the Arts in the Greater Darwin region. Since the inaugural festival in 2014, Garrmalang has exclusively programmed 100% Indigenous content and employed, supported, mentored and championed Indigenous performers, artists, managers and administrators from the Northern Territory.

The Darwin Entertainment Centre is currently the only major performing arts venue in the Northern Territory, and northern Australia, dedicated to the showcasing of Indigenous content through a stand-alone Indigenous festival.

Conceived and presented as an annual festival by the Darwin Entertainment Centre since 2014, Garrmalang features Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performers, singers, actors, musicians and visual artists, alongside academics, community and business leaders who engage in the latest critical knowledge developments for our region in areas of the Arts, Culture, Education, Land Rights and Sovereignty amongst other topical matters.

Garrmalang highlights the Darwin Indigenous community and works with the Darwin traditional owners, the Larrakia people.

The Darwin Entertainment Centre is committed to supporting the cultural expressions of Indigenous peoples in our community and region. For this purpose we have established an Indigenous Advisory Group within our governance charter to provide independent advice to the Centre on specific matters relating to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples, including the development and delivery of the Garrmalang Festival.

The Darwin Entertainment Centre is the only performance venue in Australia with an Indigenous Advisory Group established in its charter; the Group is chaired by Dr Wendy Ludwig with membership comprised of senior Indigenous figures within the community, Arts and academic sectors.

Indigenous languages matter for social, economic and political development, peaceful coexistence and reconciliation in our societies. Yet many of them are in danger of disappearing. It is for this reason that the United Nations declared 2019 the Year of Indigenous Languages in order to encourage urgent action to preserve, revitalize and promote them.
