Capacity building
Native Montreal is proud to contribute to the revitalization of Indigenous languages by offering free languages courses to its members. These introductory courses are designed to provide opportunities for Indigenous people to learn their languages and will help Indigenous people that have limited knowledge of their languages to improve them. We also want to provide an opportunity for non Indigenous people to discover one of the indigenous languages spoken in Québec.
Most of those languages are at risk of disappearing. Our main goal with our program is to give our community a way to connect with their culture and spread awareness about the importance of learning an indigenous language. Indigenous language classes are being taught for free to the indigenous community living in the urban area of Montreal. We are offering the following language classes: Abénakis, Anishinaabemowin, Atikamekw, James Bay Cree, Innu-aimun, Inuktitut, Huron-Wendat, Kanien’kéha and Mi’kmaq.
This program is funded through the Aboriginal Languages Initiative by Canadian Heritage from the gouvernment of Canada.
