The research fieldwork is a series of nine (9) fieldwork planned to gather feedback and opinions from the indigenous communities on the teaching and learning of the standard Kadazandusun language in schools. The communities are those whose indigenous languages are  from the Dusunic, Paitanic, and Murutic language families. The fieldwork is part of a large-scale and 18-month long research which received a grant from Universiti Malaysia Sabah. One of the objectives of the research is to gather feedback from relevant stakeholders on the issues related to the position of Kadazandusun – the only standard indigenous languages for Sabah’s indigenous peoples that are in the Malaysian education system. The fieldwork will be conducted by research fellows from the Borneo Institute for Indigenous Studies (BorIIS) with the cooperation of the Sabah Education Department and the Ministry of Education, Malaysia.

Indigenous languages matter for social, economic and political development, peaceful coexistence and reconciliation in our societies. Yet many of them are in danger of disappearing. It is for this reason that the United Nations declared 2019 the Year of Indigenous Languages in order to encourage urgent action to preserve, revitalize and promote them.
