Spread across five countries in the heart of Asia, the Himalayas are home to hundreds of languages, and are one our world’s major centers of linguistic diversity. Come join us at this special event as part of the International Year of Indigenous Languages, as we celebrate the Indigenous languages of the Himalayas, and look at some of the challenges they face in the twenty-first century. You will hear from, and have a chance to speak with, people from across the Himalayas, as well as internationally recognized linguistic experts about the past, present and future of the region’s Indigenous languages. Find out how political tensions, increasing mobility, climate change, and other issues are putting pressure on the Himalayas’ Indigenous peoples and their languages, and hear how communities are working to protect and revitalize their linguistic heritage.
