UArctic Thematic Network on Teacher Education and UNITWIN/UNESCO network on Teacher Education are organising a joint webinar as part of UN International Year of Indigenous Languages 2019.

Professor Huia Jankhe will speak about topic Sustaining an endangered language through initial teacher education. The Māori language experience in New Zealand . Professor Jankhe is from School of Maori Knowledge of Massey University, New Zealand. She will be joined by her colleague Mari Ropata Te Hei, coordinator of the programme.

The webinar will be held on Monday, April 15 , 2019, at 18.00 New Zealand time (UTC +12). You can check your local time here . The webinar will be presented via Adobe Connect . Joining the webinar is free of charge. The webinar will be recorded and the recording will be published afterwards.

Huia Jankhe tells about the topic: “This topic is based on my experiences developing and providing two total immersion Māori ITE programmes at undergraduate and post graduate levels, for teaching in immersion schools (called kura kaupapa Māori) in partnership with the national kura kaupapa Māori governance organisation. Te Aho Tātairangi is a unique programme, the only one of its kind in NZ where are graduates are contributing to mitigating the serious decline in teacher supply for the kura kaupapa Māori sector.”

“To add to the authenticity of what I’ll be presenting I’ve asked my colleague Mari Ropata Te Hei to join me in the webinar as she is the coordinator of the programmes and was the principal of a kura kaupapa Māori with vast experience in the sector.”, she says.

Indigenous languages matter for social, economic and political development, peaceful coexistence and reconciliation in our societies. Yet many of them are in danger of disappearing. It is for this reason that the United Nations declared 2019 the Year of Indigenous Languages in order to encourage urgent action to preserve, revitalize and promote them.
