Writing on the Wall exhibition

May 3, 2019 6:00 pm - May 19, 2019 5:00 pm

Asia and the Pacific | Australia | Melbourne | Blak Dot Gallery

Others

Writing on the Wall raises awareness of the threat of extinction of our First Nations languages. The exhibition supports the United Nations 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages and the important role language play in our daily lives. Language is part of our identity and our culture. We remind ourselves the various forms of language and communication like song and dance, storytelling, art, and the importance to continue teaching and sharing knowledge.

We step into the world of our emerging First Nations artists from around the country and of varied artistic background including music, fashion design and photography. We follow their journeys and learn through their artistic work how they champion and celebrate the survival of our First Nations languages.

The exhibition strongly encourages our audience and visitors to share your stories and impart your knowledge of our First Nation languages to ensure the survival of our languages for generations to come.

Indigenous languages matter for social, economic and political development, peaceful coexistence and reconciliation in our societies. Yet many of them are in danger of disappearing. It is for this reason that the United Nations declared 2019 the Year of Indigenous Languages in order to encourage urgent action to preserve, revitalize and promote them.
