BA-ENGLISH 154 on Air

December 4, 2018 11:00 am - April 4, 2019 11:30 am

Asia and the Pacific | Philippines | Malaybalay | Bukidnon State University

BA-ENG 154 on Air is a thirty minute, four times a week school based radio program, with the tagline “Kulturang Bukidnon”. This event was organized by our instructor and college dean together with the class officers to allow students provide basic understanding of  the indigenous culture of the ICCs in Bukidnon and to experience live radio broadcasting.

The program aims to 1.) to provide basic, but important information about the indigenous culture of the seven ethnic groups of Bukidnon, 2.) t0 develop culture sensitivity towards the ethnic groups in Bukidnon and, 3.) to depict a positive image of the seven ethnic tribes of Bukidnon.

I, together with a partner was tasked to give the general description of the ICCs in Bukidnon. We briefly discussed the language, norms and beliefs of the seven ethnic groups in Bukidnon which are the Bukidnon, Higaunon, Talaandig, Manobo, Matigasalug, Tigwahanon and Umayamnon. This ethnic groups share some common beliefs and practices. They also use the same language and one of which is the Binukid language. During our live broadcasting, we shared and translated some basic words and phrases of the Binukid language to English. We also stressed the importance of using our own heritage language because it is  one way that we can also preserve the rich culture of Bukidnon.

The program was able to help us (students and listeners) to understand the cultural diversity of the ICCs here in Bukidnon; and by understanding, we mean respecting each other’s culture. It was also a way to instill in our minds (especially the youth) the importance of learning and using our own heritage language because it is through our language that we are able to share to everyone the richness and uniqueness of Bukidnon culture.

Indigenous languages matter for social, economic and political development, peaceful coexistence and reconciliation in our societies. Yet many of them are in danger of disappearing. It is for this reason that the United Nations declared 2019 the Year of Indigenous Languages in order to encourage urgent action to preserve, revitalize and promote them.
