Preservation of Indigenous Heritage through inclusion to the College Syllabus
MALAYBALAY CITY,BUKIDNON(14, March) Indigenious Heritage is being preserved by orienting the present generation about the cultural and traditional activities of ICC-IPs. Instructors from Bukidnon State University took the opportunity for reremebering the cultural affiliation of Bukidnon residence by including it in thier discussions and course subjects.
Bukidnon is composed of seven tribes which each of them deliberately describe the Bukidnon. These seven tribe are distinct to each other and contribute different identities for the betterment of Bukidnon. The seven tribes namely: Manobo, Higaonon, Matigsalug, Bukidnon, Tigwahanon, Umayayamnun, and Talaandig, gave the place a various yet uniting appeal not only to the Philippine but also to other countries. Infact, a lot of tourist visit and choose to stay in Bukidnon for its cool and warming breeze. Foreigners also find Bukidnon settlers very accommodating and entertaining. This is why a lot of Youtuber and English speaking people have learn to speak the native dialect of these tribes and these people consider Bukidnon as a Home far away from Home.
Unfortunately, a lot of people in Bukidnon forgets the originality and peculiarity of their own tribe. This is due to the advancement of technology and the new things patronized by the new generation. This may be a sadden truth, but if not prevented, the indigenous heritage will be forgotten or worst it may die. This is why some colleges include the reorienting of Bukidnon Culture to the new generation who failed to experience the culturic lifestyle of old people by including it in educational course syllabus. One institute that does it is the Bukidnon State University. A lot of subject offered in tertiary level discusses or focus on cultural heritage of Bukidnon itself, example, Bukidnon Culture, Language and Society, Language and Culture and Humanities subject who patronize the Indigenous activities such as Street dancing, cosplay of IP’s dress, singing of Binukid song.
One activity that I may not forget in relation to preserving the indigenous heritage is doing a radio program that promotes the beliefs and ways of ICC-IPs. This said program is done by third year English Language student as a requirement for Language and Culture subject. The radio Program is entitled “English 154 On Air – Kulturang Bukidnon”. The program help a lot on reorienting not only us, who belong to the generation XYZ, but also to the new generation and ofcourse those people who forgot their own indigenous heritage. I find the radio program very essential since it also had help me become accustom to the heritage that I haven’t encounter.
There were also other activities held by Bukidnon State University as their part for conserving the Bukidnon Culture. Hence, Bachelor of Arts in English Language especially the third year and fourth year student choose to study indigenous artifacts and indigenous study for their research or thesis. In this way, a lot will be reminded for their origin and the preservation of indigenous language will be effectual.
The preservation of indigenous language is also one way to protect the indigenous heritage from disappearing. I do believed that indigenous lifestyle is the root and still the best identity the Bukidnon residence should be known for. And I find that Bukidnon State University’s way of including Bukidnon culture in the course syllabus is great. And I also encourage people all over the world to help promote your own indigenous heritage by patronizing it yourself.
