Pō ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi ma Kauaʻi

February 2, 2019 6:00 pm - February 2, 2019 9:30 pm

Asia and the Pacific | United States of America | Lihue | Kukui Grove Center Food Court

Others

Every year there are more and more festivities celebrating February as Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi!

E ko Kamāwaelualani, he leo, he kono kēia, e launa pū i ka lā ʻāpōpō no ka moʻolelo ʻana mai. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Hawaiian-language nūpepa featured stories from abroad, right next to our own moʻolelo, all ma ka ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, to delight and educate our lāhui.

Stories like 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, Beauty and the Beast, Tarzan, The Tempest, and m any more appeared alongside our moʻolelo of Pele and Hiʻiaka, Kawelo, and Kamapuaʻa. This tradition of translation continues with Disney’s Moana presented ma ka ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, with Auliʻi Cravalho reprising her starring role.

So join your fellow ʻohana ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi for bingo and moʻolelo at Kukui Grove Center, on Saturday, Feb 2.

Launching of International Year of Indigenous Languages and Celebration of International Mother Language Day
Scroll
Indigenous languages matter for social, economic and political development, peaceful coexistence and reconciliation in our societies. Yet many of them are in danger of disappearing. It is for this reason that the United Nations declared 2019 the Year of Indigenous Languages in order to encourage urgent action to preserve, revitalize and promote them.
