Story Café Special: Marion F. Morrison and Morag Law

August 29, 2019 12:30 pm - August 29, 2019 2:30 pm

Europe and North America | United Kingdom | Glasgow | Glasgow Women's Library, 23 Landressy Street, Glasgow G40 1BP

Cultural events

Immerse yourself in tales and poems from around the world, as we rediscover the joy of being read to. From wild and windswept wonderlands, to fearless feminist fairytales, Story Café will spark your curiosity and freshen your perspective. So why not sit back and relax, top up your tea, and become part of the story.

Come along to Story Café Special to hear two recent recipients of the Scottish Book Trust Gaelic New Writers Award read and discuss their work. Marion F. Morrison is a poet who lives in South Uist, whose debut collection, Adhbhar ar Sòlais / Cause of Our Joy was published in 2018. Her writing has been described as ‘flowing, eloquent and poignant’ by Gillebride MacMillan and she was awarded second place in the Donald Meek literary awards in 2018.

Morag Law has connections with Colonsay and in 2013 edited a bilingual collection of her mother’s essays, Dìleab Cholbhasach / A Colonsay Legacy , a valuable legacy of the Colonsay Gaelic dialect. Morag has had stories and articles published in Cothrom and STEALL magazines and is currently working on a short story collection.

Readings at this event will be bilingual and the discussion will be in English.

Indigenous languages matter for social, economic and political development, peaceful coexistence and reconciliation in our societies. Yet many of them are in danger of disappearing. It is for this reason that the United Nations declared 2019 the Year of Indigenous Languages in order to encourage urgent action to preserve, revitalize and promote them.
